The Indian broadcast industry is taking
a hard and serious look at HD. And
2008 will see the first major investments
into HD hardware.

ves room along the left edge for the optical soundtrack. Academy ground-glasses come in various aspect ratios.

Aspect Ratio:

Refers to the ratio of width to hei-ght of an image. Standard television aspect ratio is currently four units wide by three units high, or 4:3. Said another way 1.33 units wide for every 1 unit high or 1.33:1, read 1.33 to 1 or simply one-three-three.Super 16m-m aspect ratio is 15:9, 1.66 units wide

Telecine:
Telecine is the process of transferring moving images from film to a video signal, including frame rate and color corrections. Also the equipment or facility used to do it. As movies are normally shot using 24.00fps framerate and American TV system, NTSC, uses framerate of 29.97fps, movie framerates need to be changed in order to get them play smoothly on TV. Telecine also means a method to make an illegal bootleg copy of an original movie. Telecine method can be done in various ways, but normally it includes process where the movie is taken directly from the reel to digital format and then encoded into DVD-R, VCD, SVCD, DivX or XviD format. Other bootleg methods include Telesync, Screener, Cam and DVD-Rip.

3:2 Pull Down:

The process where 4 frames of fi-lm are converted to 5 frames of vid-eo when transferring film shot at 24 fps to video tape running at 30 fps.

Address Track Time Code:
Assigns a unique number to each video frame. (Hours:minutes:seconds:frames). All tapes, video and audio are striped with time code during telecine trans-fer. The TLC needs time code to co-ntrol the machines. Often displayed as a visible window for reference. Also known as LTC, Video Time code.

Academy Centering:

An optical alignment that puts the optical center of the lens off center in relation to the negative. This lea-

for every 1 unit high, 1.66:1 (one-six-six). High definition television (HD-TV) is slightly wider at 16:9 or 1.77 units for every 1 unit high (one-se-ven-seven). Even wider still are theatrical projections with common aspect ratios of 1.85 and 2.35. An entire wide screen image displayed on a regular television will have a black band at the top and bottom. This is called letterbox.

da Vinci:

The most widely used Digital color corrector the telecine colorist uses to “paint” the video picture. Separate from the Rank.

Digitizing:

Converting video tape images into digital information in preparation for non linear editing.
